Live
Unveiling of the 2007 North American Car and Truck of the Year Finalists |
December 13, 2006 - The DEC was honored to be
the chosen forum for the live unveiling of the 2007 North American
Car and Truck of the
Year (NACTOY) finalists. The anticipation grew as one by one the
winners were unveiled live. The car finalists are the Honda Fit,
Saturn Aura and Toyota Camry. For trucks, the finalists are the
Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Edge and Mazda CX7. Preceding the live
unveiling, a panel of three distinguished automotive journalists
-- John McElroy, host
of Autoline Detroit and auto analyst for WWJ Newsradio 950, Edward
Lapham, executive editor
of Automotive News, and Anita Lienert, syndicated automotive columnist
-- discussed the merits and new features of the 2007 models, and
the selection
process to determine the finalists for North American
Car and Truck of the Year.
The panel discussion was moderated by McElroy. He explained the
process that the journalists went through to select the finalists.
"You have to keep in mind that... it’s
a long list that we started out with," said McElroy. "There’s
52 weeks in a year… there’s
62 vehicles that we have to go through. That means for the general
public on average there’s a new car or truck coming out more
than every single week."
Edward Lapham talked about the difference between evaluating trucks
versus cars. "If it’s a real truck, you want to do different
things with it than you do with a passenger car," Lapham said. "If
it’s a truck that is also going to be a passenger vehicle,
you need to evaluate it on the same standards as a car. But you
want to know if it’s a pickup truck, does it have good utility?
Can you get the gate down? Can you tie the cargo down and that
sort of stuff?"
Anita Lienert noted that the presence of domestic models on the
list of finalists is an indicator of the shrinking quality gap
between foreign and domestic manufacturers. "I think the gap
is closing," Lienert said. "And just looking over the
semi-finalists and the finalists that we considered, Detroit looks
really, really good. And I think that we really ought to just take
a step back, if you don’t mind for a minute, and let me say
that this is probably the most prestigious auto award out there.
This is the equivalent of the Academy Awards in Hollywood, it’s
the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize in journalism, so I guess
my point is if you’re sitting in this audience and you’ve
got a car on any of these lists that we’re talking about,
I would take the afternoon off, buy some champagne and really party." |
