THEY SAID IT AT THE DETROIT ECONOMIC CLUB...

Panel Discussion: Crain's Detroit Business 40 Under 40 Honorees

November 6, 2006 - A group of three Crain's Detroit Business 40 Under 40 Honorees delivered solid professional development advice to the Detroit Economic Club Junior Executives as well as other DEC members and guests. The select panel of Crain's Detroit Business 40 Under 40 honorees included Jon Campbell, Sr., president of JMC Inc.; Michele Hodges, president of the Troy Chamber of Commerce; and Denise Williams, dean of Admissions at the University of Detroit Mercy.  Handling conflicts in the workplace is "best dealt with head-on, with the goal being a win-win and immediate resolution," Campbell said.  Campbell also advised entrepreneurs "to be willing to do all jobs... do the things no one else wants to do and you will be quietly leading by example."  Hodges strongly advocated finding a mentor who can teach good habits. She takes a different view of networking: "To be effective in your job, you must expose yourself to different people, circumstances and situations which will lead to balanced thinking," said Hodges.  When asked about educational admission trends as a result of the languishing Michigan economy, Williams, a clear proponent of continuing education, encourages "young professionals to invest in themselves, particularly in tough economic times."

Beth Chappell, President and CEO, Detroit Economic Club

Beth Chappell

Now that the election is over, it is time to turn our focus back to business. In the weeks and months ahead, the Detroit Economic Club will feature some of the world's top business executives, starting November 16 with a meeting featuring Carlos Ghosn, president & CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Following that will be the DEC's Annual Economic Outlook Meeting, showcasing some of the brightest minds in finance, automotive and construction in a panel discussion.

Not long after that, the Detroit region will kick into auto show mode. The Detroit Economic Club will be part of the action, with a live unveiling of the North American Car and Truck of the Year finalists at Cobo Center on December 13 and the annual North American International Auto Show Luncheon on January 12.

I hope to see you at one of these upcoming meetings.

All the best,

Beth
