Dow
Chemical Chairman Discusses the American Energy Crisis at the Detroit
Economic Club
|
October 30, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic Club
hosted Dow Chemical Chairman and CEO Andrew Liveris, who offered
his thoughts on the importance of a strong domestic manufacturing
base against the backdrop of a world economy that is rapidly becoming
a single market.
As a source
of high-paying
jobs and of innovation and invention, the manufacturing sector
is vital to the long-term health of the American economy. Yet Liveris
noted that high input costs in the United States, and especially
high energy costs, are driving industrial development out of the
country.
"Faced with the choice of investing here in the United States,
with the certainty of higher and more volatile natural gas prices,
how can I recommend to my board and to my shareholders to invest
here? And Dow isn’t the only company being faced and having
to make that kind of decision," said Liveris. "I'll
give you a clear factoid: currently, there are plans to build
more than eighty large-scale chemical plants across the globe in
the coming decade... with price tags of a billion dollars or more,
and thousands of good jobs. And not
one
of them
is slated
for the United States." |

Rev.
Jesse Jackson, Sr. Looks at the Future of U.S. Cities
|
October 23, 2006 -- The DEC hosted the Reverend
Jesse Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow
PUSH Coalition, Inc. in a meeting at The Masonic in Detroit. This
was his third appearance at the Detroit Economic Club, dating back
to 1984. Reverend Jackson was introduced
by Walbridge Aldinger chairman and CEO John Rakolta, Jr.
Rev. Jackson shared his ideas on
providing a tax incentive-based formula for reinvesting in America. "We
need a policy, a formula, a plan to revitalize and reincentivize investment
in urban America," said Reverend Jackson. "Cities are built on rivers
or major arteries of transportation -- geographical hubs for commerce,
industry,
manufacturing and trade to create intersecting economic interests.
There is presently a plan to decapitalize or decapitate the cities." Jackson
said that America's urban areas have not gotten the resources they
need to succeed.
Reverend Jackson commented on affirmative action, a hot topic in
Michigan, where a ballot proposal aims to strike down affirmative
action. "Affirmative action -- a plan to include,
expand and grow, is seen by some as taking from, when it's adding
to," said Jackson. "Affirmative action
is not a minority issue, it is a majority issue. Women and people
of color are the majority, not the minority." |

Michigan's
U.S. Senate Candidates Debate Live at DEC
|
October 18, 2006 -- The DEC hosted a live
debate between Michigan's candidates for the U.S. Senate: the Honorable
Debbie Stabenow and the Honorable Michael
Bouchard. The debate was moderated by Lloyd Jackson of News/Talk
760 WJR.
The candidates discussed Michigan's economy, health care
and other issues. Each candidate offered a position on the war in
Iraq -- a key issue in the minds of many voters.
"I had voted to go into Afghanistan because that's where
the people were that attacked us, and by the way, they still have
not been brought to justice," said Stabenow. "I could not in good
conscience vote to go into Iraq because the intelligence information
was not
there.
And now we see publicly that it was not there."
Sheriff Bouchard commented that mistakes have been made in Iraq.
"But, I'm certainly encouraged by the bipartisan group with Secretary
Baker
and Lee Hamilton that are looking for alternatives and solutions,"
said Bouchard. "We have to really push. Push hard and expedite
the solution there and begin to draw down our troops and get out
of
Iraq. That
goes
without saying. But having said that, we simply can't just pull
our people out arbitrarily." |

DID
YOU MISS SOMETHING?
Beth Chappell, President and CEO, Detroit
Economic Club |
|
Busy schedules
sometimes make it impossible for Detroit Economic Club
members to make all of the meetings that they'd like to attend. In
my days in the corporate world, I would have to plan my schedule very
carefully in order to manage my time effectively. For members who are
too busy to attend meetings, but don't want to miss out on the knowledge
and insight that comes from attending meetings, the Detroit Economic
Club offers several ways for members to catch up on what they might
have missed.
Through our partners at Lawrence Tech, members and guests can purchase a
DVD of past meetings. In partnership
with Detroit
Public Television, Detroit Economic Club Presents airs
on Sunday afternoons at
12:30 p.m. on Channel 56. Detroit Economic Club Presents features
highlights from past meetings. For a complete schedule of upcoming
programs, visit Detroit
Public TV's Web site. Another way for members
to access past meetings is to log in to the members-only
area of the DEC Web site and
click on "Communities" to access transcripts of past speeches.
I know there are many demands on our time. That is why the Detroit
Economic Club makes it easy to stay on top of what's happening. I hope
to see you at an upcoming DEC meeting.
All the best,
Beth |
