Chairman & CEO
of The Dow Chemical Company Coming to DEC
Topic:
Energy, Manufacturing and the Future of the American Economy
Why
attend:
Although American manufacturing remains robust, its output, as a percentage
of GDP, continues to decline. As a source of high-paying jobs and of innovation
and invention, the manufacturing sector is integral to the long-term health of
the American economy. Yet current trends threaten manufacturing, and if left
unaddressed, the sector may well weaken to the point where the entire economy
is adversely affected. As Chairman and CEO of Dow Chemical, Mr. Liveris offers
some thoughts on the importance of a strong domestic manufacturing base,
against
the backdrop of a world economy that is rapidly becoming a single market, with
many formidable new competitors.

Gubernatorial
Candidates Joint Appearance at the Detroit Economic Club
|
October 12, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic Club (DEC)
welcomed Michigan's gubernatorial candidates, the Honorable Jennifer
Granholm and Richard DeVos, Jr., for a joint appearance at Cobo Center.
Each candidate delivered a 15-minute speech, with the speaking order
determined by a coin toss. Governor Granholm spoke first and was introduced
by Co-presiding Officer
David Baker Lewis, chairman of
Lewis & Munday,
P.C.
Governor Granholm addressed Michigan's difficulty in adapting to
the highly competitive global economy.
"We've got to approach competitiveness in this global economy
as a state, as the state of Michigan, in new ways. We cannot do things
the way we have done it in the past," said Granholm. "The
way we will compete is through offering job providers the best workers,
the most
innovative
thinkers, the skills that you can't get anywhere else, and a quality
of life that will attract those workers and those businesses to our
state."
Granholm said that a focus on educating Michigan children will build
up the state's human capital, which would in turn attract business
and investment to the state.
Richard DeVos, Jr. took to the podium following Granholm's
remarks. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson served as co-presiding
officer, introducing Mr. DeVos.
DeVos talked about his urban policy, noting the revitalization he
helped to engineer in Grand Rapids. DeVos said he looks forward
to applying lessons learned in Grand Rapids throughout the state,
especially Detroit. "I'll meet with Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
and I'll tell him, as I've
said
before,
that
Detroit's
success is
critical
to Michigan's
success," said DeVos. "I'm ready to stand shoulder to shoulder, or
maybe it's eyeball to shoulder, I'm not sure, with the mayor to get
the
city
moving
in the right direction." DeVos cited a few specific areas of urban
policy that he would target. "This governor will finally get the
job done when
it comes to regional transit.
I'll
make a commitment
to Mayor Kilpatrick and mayors across this state that we'll put 500
more police on the streets by the end of the year," said DeVos. |

Decision
2006 Fast Approaching...
Beth Chappell, President and CEO, Detroit
Economic Club |
|
In the last Newsmaker Report, I reminded readers that the
Detroit Economic Club is featuring a number of election-related meetings
this fall. I am pleased to announce that we have just added the Reverend
Jesse Jackson, Sr. to the fall schedule. Reverend Jackson will address
the nation's urban policies when he comes to our podium on October
23.
In addition to Reverend Jackson's sure-to-be insightful speech at the
Detroit Economic Club, the candidates for Michigan's
junior seat in the U.S. Senate will participate in a live debate at
the DEC. Both Democratic incumbent Senator Debbie Stabenow and Republican
challenger Michael Bouchard will be at the podium for this important
debate.
As Election Day approaches, I hope you choose to get informed at the
Detroit Economic Club.
All the best,
Beth |
