THEY SAID IT AT THE DETROIT ECONOMIC CLUB...

Anna Escobedo Cabral

U.S. Treasurer Discusses the State of the Economy

September 12, 2006 -- The Honorable Anna Escobedo Cabral, the U.S. Treasurer, spoke from the DEC podium about the state of the U.S. economy, as well as U.S. Treasury Department financial education and anti-counterfeiting initiatives. "Since August of 2003, since the signing of the Jobs Growth Bill, we've seen unemployment fall. We have seen jobs created across the country. 5.7 million net new jobs in this country. 128,000 in last month alone. 36 consecutive months of job growth. Those are good numbers. They're important," said Cabral. "We need to keep the economy strong. Folks need to have the kind of money and resources to be able to purchase those new cars and trucks that we're all worried about producing and continuing to keep marketable inside this country," said Cabral. Dennis Archer, Chairman of Dickinson Wright PLLC and member of the DEC Board of Directors, was the presiding officer for this meeting.

Ron Gettelfinger

UAW President on Critical Labor Issues

September 7, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic Club hosted Ron Gettelfinger, president of the International Union, UAW. At a time of sweeping change in the auto industry, Mr. Gettelfinger addressed the challenges facing the UAW and the future of one of America's most important industries. "Is the die cast and our fate sealed? We in the UAW sure don't think so. We don't buy into the currently fashionable notion that the domestic auto industry is in an irreversible decline," said Gettelfinger. "Nor do we believe for a minute that the problems facing this industry and this country are too big and too complex to solve." Eleanor Josaitis, co-founder of Focus: HOPE and member of the Detroit Economic Club Board of Directors, introduced Treasurer Cabral.

Focus on Economics
Beth Chappell, President and CEO, Detroit Economic Club

Beth Chappell

In my opinion, economists and sociologists are the people to whom we ought to turn more than we do for instruction in the grounds and foundations of all rational decisions.

Oliver Wendell Holmes

The Detroit Economic Club welcomes all those who share an interest in the major issues of the day. Some of the most critical issues currently facing southeastern Michigan are economic. So within the past few weeks, the DEC has hosted UAW President Ron Gettelfinger as well as the U.S. Treasurer Anna Escobedo Cabral. Both of these leaders discussed the state of the economy. The American manufacturing sector played a key part of President Gettelfinger's speech, while Treasurer Cabral discussed the overall economic picture as it stands today.

Business and government leaders will be expected to make difficult decisions during a time of economic and political uncertainty and change. The Detroit Economic Club brings the world's most insightful speakers to the podium to help DEC members and guests make well-informed decisions.

All the best,

Beth
