Richard DeVos, Jr., 2006 Gubernatorial Candidate and Former President of Alticor, Outlines Plan to Turn Michigan Around |
||||||
| May 23, 2006 -- The Detroit
Economic Club hosted Republican Gubernatorial Candidate
and former President of Alticor Richard DeVos, Jr. In his speech titled "Seven
Steps to a Turnaround,"
DeVos highlighted his plan to boost Michigan's economy
and
create jobs. Based on his experience running Alticor, one of Michigan's
largest corporations, DeVos stated why he believes change is Michigan
urgently needed. He believes consistent, principled
leadership that brings
people together to solve problems can make a difference. As part of a turnaround plan, DeVos said that Michigan's business taxes, especially the Single Business Tax, need to be overhauled or replaced. "We have tax policy that I think most agree, has just simply outlived its usefulness. There's no purpose in going backwards and trying to say 'was it a good idea or a bad idea?' It is what it is. And it's not appropriate in my view, and I think the view of the majority of us in this room, to continue forward with that particular tax [the SBT]," said DeVos. "Right behind it is a thing called personal property tax, that's another issue that I do think we have to work out. And I think our manufacturers are particularly concerned about personal property taxes. Does this mean we get rid of them completely? No, not at all. I've been on record saying we need a replacement. You can't take that much out of a budget. But we do need a replacement. It does need to be a business-based replacement. It needs to be more sensitive to profitability and business performance and it shouldn't be punitive to job creation." |

As you can see, the DEC covered many of the topics in the news in the past year. In some cases, speeches at the DEC made headlines themselves. Members heard from prominent CEOs from such companies as Delphi, AT&T and Pfizer, as well as government leaders from the Treasury and Commerce Departments and the U.S. Senate. Right
now the Detroit Economic Club is putting together a lineup
for 2006-2007 that is sure to please everyone.
