Starbucks Chairman Discusses Building a Business "The Right Way" |
||||||
| May 15, 2006 -- Howard Schultz, chairman of Starbucks Coffee Company, spoke at the Detroit Economic Club at Cobo Center. In his speech, "The Starbucks Experience," Schultz, a Northern Michigan University alumnus, gave an intimate and informal discussion on building a business, sharing personal experiences and anecdotes from the building of Starbucks. Schultz focused on how to build a company "the right way," in an environment where people come first and profitability and social consciousness are truly integrated into the fiber of the business. Schultz illustrated a personal case study in lowered consumer expectations by holding up a $2.75 box of candy that was only half-full. "The U.S. consumer is at an all time low -- all time -- in terms of consumer confidence in believing in corporate America, our government, political leaders, and institutions. Did you see the poll numbers last week in the New York Times? The poll numbers, of not only the President, but unfortunately for everybody who's running for president, are the lowest in modern times," said Schultz. "This is not an indictment of one company or one political party. This is the cloud that we are living under," said Schultz. Schultz suggests that truth and authenticity are what consumers are after, and that businesses, as well as elected leaders, need to tune into what people really want. Prior to Schultz's remarks, the DEC held its Annual Member Meeting and a Sponsor Member Networking Reception highlighted by a complimentary Starbucks coffee-tasting. | |||||||

AT&T Chairman & CEO Promotes New Internet Video Technology at DEC |
||||||
| May 8, 2006 -- Edward Whitacre, Jr., chairman & CEO of AT&T addressed the DEC at The Masonic. In his speech, "Spurring Competition," Whitacre discussed the benefits that business and residential customers are experiencing as a result of changes sweeping through the telecom industry. Specifically, Whitacre discussed a new AT&T technology called "Project Lightspeed." The new technology will deliver TV using Internet Protocol, or Internet Protocol Television, as an alternative to cable. "The other companies bring a fiber to the house and it's a traditional way of doing it, bringing all the signals to your house. We are going to be doing it a little bit differently, and it's pretty interesting," said Whitacre. "First of all, it's very high-quality TV and you get all the same programming to watch that you get from a cable. But with ours, you get to pick the camera you'd like to watch it from. So if you're watching a sporting event, maybe the Spurs vs. the Pistons, and you want to view that from overhead, you click a button on your clicker, switch camera angles and watch a sporting event from any angle that you want to watch it." | |||||||

At our Annual Member Meeting on May 15, I took a moment
at the podium to recognize all of the wonderful organizations and individuals
who make the Detroit Economic Club a success. Without dedicated sponsors,
partners and an active board of directors, the Detroit Economic Club would
not be able to be the top-ranked speaking forum that it is. At the Member
Meeting, the DEC said goodbye to several retiring directors, and also welcomed
new directors to the board. For those of you who were unable
to attend the Member Meeting this year, I ask that you take a moment to
review the list of organizations that support the DEC as sponsors, as
well as partners who contribute to the mission
of the club through in-kind support. If your organization is not on that
list, please consider supporting the
DEC as a sponsor or partner. In addition, the DEC board of directors plays a key role in the success of the club through their leadership, counsel and attendance at DEC meetings. Thank you once again to all of the wonderful organizations and people who help the DEC continue its tradition of bringing you the leading business, government and social issues and debate of the day. I look forward to seeing you at our final meeting of this season on Tuesday, May 23. All the best, Beth |
