The Honorable Carl Levin, U.S. Senator, Addressed Issues Facing America |
||||||
| May 1, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic Club
(DEC) hosted the Honorable Carl Levin, U.S. Senator from the State of Michigan.
Senator Levin discussed
his proposals for an Apollo-type initiative to promote American manufacturing,
and his views on how to avoid further conflicts related to U.S. dependency
on foreign oil. "America’s economy and well-being are directly
linked to the health of our manufacturing sector," said Senator Levin.
"If that statement sounds strong
to you, then you heard me right. We cannot speak strongly enough in defense
of manufacturing. We cannot give in to the canard that says we only need
an economy based on services and technology, and the only things we need
to build are Web sites and Wal-Marts that retail foreign-made goods.
The fact is that the rise and fall in the number of manufacturing jobs
in America is directly related to the rise and fall of median family
income." Levin proposed a plan for advancing automotive technology in a move that would nurture the manufacturing industry and place the United States in a more secure global position. "From a policy perspective, developing new vehicles that run on alternatives to oil is a silver bullet that will slay many beasts. Or, to use a gentler metaphor, it is a triple play – a three-for. Investing in advanced fuel autos and ethanol and developing leap-ahead advanced vehicle technologies is not only good for our manufacturing base, it is critical for our security," Levin said. "The struggle over energy supplies is a great and growing source of friction in the world. Today we depend on a highly unstable region for oil that our economy is so dependent upon, and we have been forced to make alliances with countries that do not share our values." |

Detroit Tigers Spread Excitement About Strong Start in 2006 |
||||||
| April 28, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic
Club hosted the 2006 Detroit Tigers, including Tigers President, CEO
and General Manager David Dombrowski and Manager Jim Leyland, who talked
about the 2006 Major League Baseball season. Many current Tigers players
and coaches were on hand for the event. Dombrowski
addressed the ball club's strong start in 2006."We have that right
mixture now. We have young players coming through the system. We have some
young veterans that have been able to mature at the big league level. And
we have some guys on this club that are very recognizable all star type
players that have enjoyed some success in recent years. So it's a great
combination on the field... For me the final step in that regard is getting
the right leadership on the field at the Major League level," said
Dombrowski. Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc., in his role as presiding officer, asked audience questions of both Dombrowski and Leyland. "Are there any similarities between this Detroit Tigers team and your 1997 Florida Marlins World Series Champs?" Ilitch asked Tigers Manager Jim Leyland. "Well, there's 25 of us," responded Leyland. "I think we're still in that process and I think that... this is a team obviously that has a chance to compete. And when you compete, you never know how this is going to turn out," said Leyland. |

Globalization
a Key Subject at DEC |
|||||||
|
Globalization is changing the face of Detroit, Michigan,
the United States and the world. As global trade increases, there
will be ups and downs for the U.S. economy. To minimize pain and maximize
the upside potential of world trade, staying informed is key. That is why
the Detroit Economic Club has been featuring key leaders knowledgeable
in global trade. This spring, the DEC hosted U.S. Steel Chairman
and CEO John Surma, U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, JPMorgan
Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Delphi Chairman and CEO Steve Miller and U.S. Senator
Carl Levin. Still to come is AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre, Jr. and Starbucks Chairman
Howard Schultz. In the new era of globalization, Francis Bacon's famous maxim, "knowledge is power," is perhaps truer than ever. Arm yourself for success by attending any of our upcoming meetings. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting. All the best, Beth |
