JPMorgan Chase CEO Discusses the Challenges of Management |
|||||
| March 27, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic
Club (DEC) hosted Jamie Dimon, chief executive officer, JPMorgan Chase & Co.,
a leading global financial services firm with assets of $1.2 trillion and
operations in more than 50 countries. For the last 25 years, Dimon
has been at the forefront of changes in the financial services industry.
He shared his unique perspective on the industry's evolution
and the business and management capabilities needed
to succeed. Dimon talked about significant challenges, including globalization,
consolidation and the leadership of large, complex companies. " It’s really the combination of litigation, the criminalization of accounting, Sarbanes Oxley, that I think is creating real issues in this country," said Dimon. "In fact, I was with a bunch of private equity – a group the other day, and they were talking about how many companies want to go private. They don’t want the scrutiny, they can’t pay for Sarbanes Oxley, they can do the right things for the company [if they go] private. They have a much more difficult time doing the right things for the company [when they are] public. And therefore, this is changing our capital markets a little bit, in a way that I certainly did not predict. And I don’t know where the pendulum’s going." |

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Discusses America's Position in the Global Economy |
|||||
| March 20, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic
Club hosted the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Gutierrez. Gutierrez
discussed America's leadership in today's dynamic global economy. He highlighted
President Bush's American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI), an effort to
strengthen our nation's ability to compete in the global economy through
investments in research and development (R&D), education, entrepreneurship
and innovation. Gutierrez also commented on the proper role of government
in innovation and how the right policies can create the most fertile environment
for growth and opportunity. Secretary Gutierrez, a former Kellogg's executive, addressed uneven national economic growth. "I realize that the benefits of our growing economy are not consistent throughout the country. I want to acknowledge that up front, that we have good national numbers that aren't necessarily the same in all regions. But it's important to recognize that as a nation we are competing, and we're holding our own in an environment that is getting, as you well know, more difficult and more competitive. The global environment today is more competitive than anything we have ever seen," Secretary Gutierrez said. The Secretary discussed the benefits of trade. "Free trade is our best hope to raise living standards around the world. And numerous studies have shown that removing world trade barriers would create economic growth equal to adding another Canada or another Switzerland to the global economy every single year," Secretary Gutierrez said. |

Great
Schedule Continues at DEC |
||||||
|
Happy spring! The thermometer is finally creeping north
of winter, and we've been doing our best to keep things hot at the
club. The DEC March schedule, which included John Surma, Jr., chairman
and CEO of U.S. Steel Corporation; the Honorable Carlos Gutierrez, U.S.
Secretary
of Commerce;
and Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co.; provided a variety of
interesting information. The April schedule really heats up starting Monday, April 3 when Steve Miller, chairman & CEO of Delphi Corporation will be at the DEC podium. A sure sign of spring is the arrival of our Detroit Tigers who will be featured at the Club's April 28th meeting. Make your plans now to attend these or any of our upcoming meetings. All the best, Beth |
