THEY SAID IT AT THE DETROIT ECONOMIC CLUB...

The Honorable Bill Frist

U.S. Senate Majority Leader on Reforming America's Health Care System

February 27, 2006 -- The Detroit Economic Club hosted the Honorable Bill Frist, U.S. Senate Majority Leader (R-Tennessee) at The Masonic in Detroit. In the address, titled, "Health Care for a Global Economy," Senator Frist discussed various domestic and global economic issues, including the critical need for a reformation of America's health care system. Frist, a heart surgeon, believes the current health care system must be improved to maintain an economic competitive edge in the global marketplace. Demographic shifts are driving much of the current health care crisis, according to Senator Frist. "If we consider demography as destiny, global leadership in this world may well be passing from the first world to the third world. Now what do I mean by this? Fifty years ago, six major industrial countries: the United States, Japan, Germany, the U.K., Italy and France, were ranked in the top 12 most populated countries in the world. Today, of those six, there are only two: the United States and Japan. And in 50 years, there will be but one: the United States," Senator Frist said.

Improving America's health care system must start with Medicare, according to Senator Frist. "And as Medicare goes, and this is where our leadership is important, so goes Medicaid and indeed the private sector. Now leading on health care reform with Medicare, we move all health care: Medicare, employer-sponsored plans, the private sector, in a similar direction. A direction of greater efficiencies, greater value, lower cost, greater availability," Senator Frist said.

Washington Comes to DEC
Beth Chappell, President and CEO, Detroit Economic Club

Beth Chappell

The Detroit Economic Club's recognition as one of the top three Most Valued Podiums for CEOs means the DEC is one of the world's premier forums for tackling the great business, government and social issues of our day. But the DEC is not just for CEOs. Increasingly, Washington's heavy-hitters are visiting the DEC to make news. This week, the Detroit Economic Club hosted U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and on March 20, the Club will host U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. Earlier this season, the DEC hosted U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow for the second time, as well as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Bill Carr. And of course, the Detroit Economic Club is proud to have hosted every sitting president from Richard M. Nixon to George W. Bush.

From health care to the war on terror to global competitiveness -- many of the same issues creating a buzz inside the beltway are being addressed at at the Detroit Economic Club. If what happens in Washington is important to you as a citizen, or if federal policy affects your business, don't miss your chance to hear from, and ask questions to, government leaders.

As always, I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting.

All the best,

Beth
