Pfizer CEO Urges New Approach to Health Care |
|||||
| February 13, 2006 -- Hank McKinnell, chairman and CEO of Pfizer Inc., the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical company, revealed new approaches for changing "sick care" to "well care" to members and guests of the Detroit Economic Club. McKinnell called for greater emphasis on wellness and prevention. "Keep the whole person healthy, and in turn, you will keep the whole health care system healthy. Invest in health and you also invest in wealth. Because healthy societies create wealth far more quickly than unhealthy ones," McKinnell said. He called the current health care system "sick care," as it tends to focus on dealing with catastrophic health care problems, as opposed to preventing catastrophic crises from occurring. "The 'sick care' system we've allowed to flourish, isn't by nature going to be efficient. Not when what we pay for are procedures. If we reward procedures over prevention, operations over outcomes, and transactions over transformations, then please don't be surprised if we get a lot of procedures, operations and transactions, that's what we pay for. We need a health care system that starts with the question: 'how do we keep a person healthy?'" McKinnell said. | ||||||

Super Bowl XL Host Committee Chair Roger Penske Awarded 2005 Crain's Newsmaker of the Year Award |
|||||
| February 8, 2006 -- Super Bowl XL Host Committee Chairman Roger Penske was recognized as the 2005 Crain's Newsmaker of the Year. The meeting honoring Penske was co-hosted by the Detroit Economic Club, Crain's Detroit Business and inFORUM, formerly known as the Women's Economic Club. Penske paid tribute to the thousands of host committee workers, public sector workers, volunteers, residents and others who made Super Bowl XL a success. "Before last weekend, Detroit's assets were relatively unknown. Last week with great pride, we reintroduced Detroit to the world. And the response was tremendous," said Penske. The revitalization of downtown Detroit that was linked to the Super Bowl should continue, Penske said. "The world came, the game is over. But I'm going to continue this work, continue to participate in the revitalization of our city. And, I ask you to join me," Penske said. | ||||||

NFL Commissioner Congratulates Detroit on Super Bowl XL Success |
|||||
| February 2, 2006 -- Paul Tagliabue, National Football League commissioner since 1989, addressed the Detroit Economic Club during Super Bowl week. The luncheon was an officially-sanctioned Super Bowl XL Host Committee event. Rich Eisen, Host of NFL Total Access on the NFL Network, conducted a live interview of Tagliabue before an audience of DEC members and guests. DEC Board Chairman and Ford Motor Company Chairman and CEO William Clay Ford, Jr. served as presiding officer of the meeting. Commissioner Tagliabue commented on the success of Super Bowl week: "I just think that the feeling around town is one of quality, excitement, inclusiveness, energy. It's not just the focus on the short term, but there's a goal here of using this, among many other things that you're doing in your community, to keep Detroit as great as it has always been," said Tagliabue. Part of what makes Detroit a great sports city is its all star athletes. "We have had, and have, so many outstanding young men in the league from this area, and I think it's a tribute to what this community has done to support youth sports over the years. Jerome Bettis is not what he is by accident. It's because of community institutions, parents, schools. But I think it's one of the strengths of this town," said Tagliabue. | ||||||
Momentum
From Super Bowl Continues for |
||||||
|
The
big game is over. The throngs of out-of-town visitors have gone home.
We hosted NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue just days before the game.
Afterwards, we hosted the man who made Super Bowl XL happen for Detroit,
Roger Penske, as he
was awarded the 2005 Crain's Newsmaker of the Year award. It was a very
exciting time for Detroit, for the state of Michigan, and for the Detroit
Economic Club. What's next for the DEC? For the remainder of the 2005-2006 speaking season, we will continue to bring top CEOs and government leaders to the podium. On February 27 we host the Honorable Bill Frist, U.S. Senate Majority Leader (R-Tenn.), as he addresses the nation's health care crisis. As a licensed M.D., Senator Frist brings a unique perspective to the health care debate. On March 6, Ernst & Young Chairman and CEO James Turley will speak at the DEC, and later in the month, U.S. Steel President and CEO John Surma Jr. will address the challenges facing U.S. manufacturers. If you care about health care and manufacturing (and who doesn't?), you won't want to miss our upcoming string of late-winter meetings. As always, I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting. All the best, Beth |
