FORMER PRESIDENTIAL ENVOY SHARES EXPERIENCES IN IRAQ |
|||||
| January 18, 2006 -- Ambassador
L. Paul Bremer, III, former US Presidential Envoy to Iraq, addressed DEC
members and guests at the Townsend
Hotel. Bremer led efforts to restore Iraq's economy, build an open democratic
political system and deal with mounting security threats. He recalled firsthand
the horrors he witnessed when he arrived in Iraq. "Those of you who
oppose the war," said Bremer, "and I'm sure there are some of
you, I encourage you someday when you have time, go see the mass graves.
Go up and see the tombs in Halabja. Talk to the victims of his torture chambers
and his rape rooms. And tell me then we didn't do a noble thing. We did."
Bremer also noted Iraq's social and economic improvements as a result of
its liberation in 2004. "The economy is the untold good news story,"
he said. "Inflation, which had been raging when we arrived, fell to
28 percent last year. Unemployment today is about half of what it was at
liberation, and there’s been a 50 percent increase of women in the
workforce. Twelve times as many Iraqis today have phones as before liberation.
Eighty-one percent have access to cleaner water than before the war."
Bremer's new book, My Year in Iraq: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope, was on sale during the event and the Ambassador signed copies after his speech. |

New Chrysler CEO Makes First Public Remarks at DEC |
|||||
| January 11, 2006 -- Chrysler
Group President and CEO Tom LaSorda spoke to DEC members and guests
at the Royal Park
Hotel. In his first public address in his new position, he outlined
the responsibility of the domestic auto industry to ensure its competitiveness
in a global environment. LaSorda used the DEC podium to announce one of
Chrysler's new energy strategies. "I am pleased to announce that beginning
with our 2007 model year Dodge
Ram, we will endorse the use of B20, a 20 percent biodiesel
mix, for use by our military, government, and commercial fleet customers,"
said LaSorda. "We believe that allowing our fleet customers to use
fuel made to the current military specification will help accelerate the
development and adoption of a national B20 specification for general use." LaSorda warned nay-sayers not to underestimate the domestic automakers during this challenging time. "While our domestic rivals are down for the moment, don’t count them out," LaSorda said."Many counted us out just a few years ago, and I know we did not count ourselves out. There’s no inherent competitive superiority to Japanese or import auto companies; or in turn, no inherent inferiority on the part of the home teams. Clearly it falls on the shoulders of those of us in positions of leadership in this industry and management and labor to ensure that our companies and our people can compete against global competition." |

Nielsen Media President & CEO Outlines Future Media Trends |
|||||
| January 30, 2006 -- President and CEO Susan Whiting of Nielsen Media Research, the world's leading ratings company, addressed the Detroit Economic Club at the Troy Marriott. Whiting talked about revolutionary media trends, such as audience fragmentation, time-shifting, and now place-shifting - the practice of recording programming to watch or listen to in another location. "While it's only just begun, 2006 promises to be a tipping point in the transformation of media, forcing companies to seriously rethink just about every aspect of their businesses. From programming and pricing, to advertising and customer relations." The purpose of audience measurement, according to Whiting, is to provide independent and objective data to help advertisers determine if they are getting a fair return for their advertising investments. "The Super Bowl is a perfect example... we'll furnish a broad range of information that's very helpful to all kinds of companies -- like what were the total advertising expenditures? What was the Super Bowl-related Internet traffic? What were NFL merchandise sales? Consumer and lifestyle information and other analysis. We'll even measure the Super Bowl's effect on movie attendance, and track album sales of artists who appeared at half-time." | ||||||
