THEY SAID IT AT THE DETROIT ECONOMIC CLUB...

The Honorable Kwame Kilpatrick

Detroit Mayor Inaugurates 2006 North American International Auto Show

January 13, 2006 -- The Honorable Kwame Kilpatrick delivered his first public speech since his inaugural celebrations, addressing nearly 800 DEC members and guests during the annual auto show celebration, co-hosted by the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Mayor Kilpatrick discussed the upcoming Super Bowl XL. "Only 12 cities in the history of this country have ever hosted a Super Bowl. This is our shot. In truth, the game is not nearly as important as all the events that go on around the game. Those events give us a platform for starting to change the image of the city of Detroit around this nation and around the world. Super Bowl XL... will serve as a catalyst to stimulate the improvements that we have been waiting for in this region for a very long time," the Mayor said.

The Mayor also called for an expansion of Cobo Center. "There's no auto show in the entire world that compares to this one. This is the best of the best, and we need to make sure that the North American International Auto Show stays put right here in the city of Detroit," the Mayor said.

Before the Mayor's speech, The Detroit News and Local 4 revealed its Driver's Choice Award Winners.

Auto Show Panel

Auto Show Panel Gives Insider View of Vehicle Technologies

January 11, 2006 -- With the latest in cutting-edge automotive technology only a few blocks away at Cobo Center, industry experts gathered at Compuware's World Headquarters for the second annual Auto Show Panel.

Anthony Pratt, senior manager of global powertrain & component forecast at J.D. Power & Associates said hybrids have a better chance of success in the United States than diesel: "The real success of hybrids I think is related to the fact that it is the only technology that is really available in all states."

When it comes to consumer appeal, Dr. Robert W. Schumacher, director of advanced product development & business strategy for Delphi Electronics & Safety said: "The ultimate value is entertainment... That's what people have always been willing to pay for... I think there's a great opportunity for OEM's to be involved in the providing of entertainment services to people directly in their cars over multiple high-bandwidth wireless networks... There's wireless technology that's coming," said Peter Wengert, global director of sales & marketing in the Automotive Business Unit of Microsoft Corporation. "But... a music player, an iPod, a phone, all come with a USB port. And I think the auto industry is trying to realize that there are some open standards that you could put in the car that allows you to plug and play over time, so... there's always that interface that will stay fresh for however long you own the car."

OnStar’s Vice President of Sales, Service & Marketing Anthony DiSalle addressed the need for integration of the many voice recognition systems appearing on the market. "Right now the voice [recognition] systems are coming through so many different elements of the vehicle. You've got voice rec on a [navigation] screen, you've got voice rec perhaps through a telematics application, like OnStar or TeleAid, and they all sound different... Somebody's going to have to get their arms around that so it's a seamless customer experience."

DEC Makes Way For Super Bowl XL
Beth Chappell, President and CEO, Detroit Economic Club

Beth Chappell

As always, the North American International Auto Show provided an exciting and insightful backdrop for our first few meetings of the new year. The Junior Executives hosted their second annual Auto Show Panel exploring the future of automotive technology, and Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick conducted his first public address since the inaugural celebration.

When the Auto Show wraps up on Sunday, Detroit will turn its focus to an even bigger event: Super Bowl XL on February 5. Don't miss an exciting chance for a glimpse into the National Football League when we host NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue on February 2. And on February 8, Roger Penske, Chairman of the Penske Corporation and of the Detroit Super Bowl XL Host Committee, will address the DEC as the Crain's 2005 Newsmaker of the Year.

I invite you to join us as we celebrate this most exciting time in Detroit.

All the best,

Beth
